J.C. Penney is honing in on its home department as part of a bigger plan to turn its stores into mini-malls of sorts.
The struggling department-store chain is unveiling revamped home areas within its stores that feature 20 boutiques that highlight 50 new brands. The areas will include an eclectic mix of items, from $60 Michael Graves' stainless steel teakettles to $1,850 Jonathan Adler Happy Chic sofas.
The home areas, which Penney will begin to roll out Friday at 500 of its 1,100 stores, will test CEO Ron Johnson's plan

Jeff Davis, D&H: The most important thing we’re doing to keep dealers profitable this year is to continue to deliver new, cutting-edge products. These would include 4K-resolution and Ultra HD TVs. To help dealers diversify, we’re branching into new categories such as sports and recreational goods, specialty housewares, and higher-end home automation products. Also, we offer products to retailers that adhere to UMAP policies, to preserve margins.
Retailer and Technician Training
12 volt retailers and technicians rarely have adequate time for training. We generally seem crunched for staff development time. It’s changing ‘what we do’ or ‘how we do it’ each day. “OEM electronics are no longer simple,” says Andy Wehmeyer, a global product line manager at Harman Consumer Group. “We need more skills than ever to provide consumer value in a successful and profitable installation bay.”
