Major Appliance Shipments Fall 4.1% in December Versus Year Ago

Shipments of major household appliances in the U.S. dropped 4.1% in December, reflecting consumers’ cautiousness about big purchases and less price discounting to drive higher sales.

Shipments of what are known as the “Big Six” appliance categories–washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers and ranges and ovens–fell to 3.35 million units during the four weeks ended Dec. 31, from 3.5 million units in December 2011, according to figures released Tuesday by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. December shipments rose 16.8% from November, when shipments climbed 1% from November 2011.
