Rumors Swirl of Smaller iPad, Which Jobs Detested

Apple generates more gossip than the Kardashians.

There's a constantly spinning mill of rumors about Apple products, most of which turn out to be untrue. What's unusual this week is that talk has revived of a smaller iPad model, an idea company founder Steve Jobs derided publicly a year before he died.

Apple and its suppliers aren't commenting. Rumors of a smaller iPad, or "iPad mini" have percolated ever since the first iPad was launched two years ago. This time around, they're fed by media reports from South Korea, China and Taiwan

Wringing profits from a margin-challenged category isn't a new problem for CE dealers. It recently hit a tipping point with TVs where vendors had to institute MAP and unilateral pricing policies to stem the ticket-slide tide. Tablets are just as margin-challenged, but there is no such vendor strategy on the horizon. Dealers are left on their own to extract as much profit as they can from the category.

Worldwide Tablet Sales Seen Doubling This Year

Worldwide sales of tablets are expected to reach 118.9 million units this year, nearly doubling last year's 60 million units. That's according to research released this week by research firm Gartner.
