Why your Smartphone is Smarter than your Car Radio

Automakers are adding all kinds of connected services and applications to the dash. Some embed connectivity into the car, while others use Internet-enabled portable devices.

But as this technology evolves, more automakers are combining the two: embedded connectivity for stable, critical features such as automatic crash notification (ACN), and tethered smartphones for cloud-based infotainment using apps such as Pandora and Stitcher.

Examples of this “hybrid” approach include BMW’s ConnectedDrive and Lexus’ Enform among luxury automakers, and Chevrolet with the Spark’s and Sonic’s MyLink system on the lower end of the market.
