Alana Cohen, 25, Brand Manager, Quantum Networks
Brief Description of Your Role: I’m a buyer on steroids. As a brand manager, my goal is to build a custom marketing and sales strategy that is in line with my clients core values and messaging. I can only achieve this by constantly learning about new eCommerce trends and continually trying new sales and marketing tactics.
A typical day for me includes: bringing on new brands, monitoring current brands’ performance and staying in constant communication so they know we are crushing it for them. I am always learning and implementing new sales techniques to differentiate our clients products from the rest. I also help the junior buyers learn the ropes and help guide our merchandising team.
Years in Industry: 3
Where You Grew Up: East Brunswick, NJ
Where You Live Now: Edison, NJ
College: Touro College
Major Accomplishments: I started at Quantum as an Executive Assistant, answering the door, making coffee and filling applications. When I first started, I was super shy. I remember physically shaking my entire first cold call. Now I am managing a team of four, and flying around the world to meet with C level decision makers. One of my proudest accomplishments is what I’ve been able to achieve with one of our partners, Antlion Audio. Before they started working with us, they were selling about 600 units a month. My team and I helped clean up their marketplace presence and create awesome marketing campaigns for them. We now sell over 3,000 units per month! That’s a 400 percent increase in less than two years! We are not a “me-too” company. In that spirit, I have helped create our own branded premium audio accessories to be bundled with some of our brands as a value-add. That has done really well for us thus far.
What I Like Best About My Job: I love watching brands I help succeed. I like to watch them go from 0 sales to thousands and know that we helped get them there.
What I Like Least About My Job: Not being able to predict outcomes. Sometimes, you can invest loads of hours into a brand, and then something unexpected happens, and the brand stops producing product; that’s always disappointing to see.
Favorite Pastime/Hobby: Baking
Last Book I Read: The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
Favorite Movie: Prom Night
Best Concert Ever Seen: Britney Spears: Piece of Me
Favorite CE: I’m not sure I can pick just one. I love music, and anything that makes my music sound better. Recently, I’ve been really into this headphone amplifier called the Nexum Aqua.
If You Could Be Anyplace Else Right Now, Where Would it Be and What Would You Be Doing?: Hanging out on the beach with my friends.
What makes you believe the CE industry will get healthier and thrive during the next five years? (Or maybe you think it won’t.) Why?:Retail has been on the decline for a while now. Although anyone can open an amazon account, the amount of sellers that bring incremental value are few and far between. I have seen a shift where brands want less partners, but the partners they partner with come with unique knowledge and abilities.
I work with a number of brands who have recently cut their authorized online sellers to only a few, or in some cases, only us. This allows the few chosen sellers to really hone in on making a brand successful, since the market is no longer supersaturated. All of these brands have had stronger sales as a result.
