The company said in its earnings statement that its net income jumped 71 percent to $384 million in the fourth quarter, which ended on the last day of 2009. The company also posted fourth quarter sales of $9.5 billion, a 42 percent rise.
Electronics played a role, as the company's Worldwide Electronics & Other General Merchandise sales category posted a 60 percent increase in the quarter to $4.61 billion. And while the company has never released exact sales figures for its Kindle device, CEO Jeff Bezos touted the sales of the device.
"Millions of people now own Kindles," Bezos said as part of the announcement. "And Kindle owners read, a lot. When we have both editions, we sell 6 Kindle books for every 10 physical books. This is year-to-date and includes only paid books -- free Kindle books would make the number even higher. It's been an exciting 27 months."
