Launched 14 years ago by Value Electronics, the Annual TV Shootout will return to CE Week 2017. The event, which pits top-of-the-line TVs against one another in a variety of categories, will take place—for the first time—on the CE Week show floor. The TV Shootout will run from Wednesday, July 12 through the end of the show on Thursday, July 13, with a special program scheduled to close CE Week 2017 that will include the announcement of the winners.
This year's TV Shootout will be hosted by professional calibrators Joel Silver, the Founder and President of the Imaging Science Foundation, and Kevin Miller, President of ISFTV and Industry Consultant. The final roster of TVs appearing in this year's Shootout hasn't been set, but Silver and Miller said that the program will feature a wide array of 4K, OLED, Ultra HD, and HDR sets from all of the top TV manufacturers. Some of the TVs that they're aiming to have as participants include:
- Sony XBR-65Z9D Backlit LCD
- Sony XBR-65A1E OLED
- LG OLED65G7P OLED
- Samsung QN65Q9F LED Backlit
- Vizio P65E1
Last year, the Shootout showed the strong progress TV manufacturers had made with the introduction of HDR technology. Though all sets performed well (no set scored lower than a 7.6 out of 10 overall), LG dominated the show for the third year in a row, coming out on top in eight of the nine categories.
"This year, we invited engineers and technical professionals who work every day on content creation with broadcast quality displays, as well as industry innovators, to evaluate how the premium TVs perform, and compete with each other,'' said Miller. "With the growing popularity of Ultra HD and HDR (High Dynamic Range) video sources as well as the great advancements that have taken place in TV technology, this will be a great year for flat panel displays."
Switching things up a little this year, Miller and Silver said that rather than scoring the TVs across a wide range of categories and producing one winner, the Shootout will have judges award TVs in three different categories: Studio Lighting/Home Theater, HDR Performance, and Streaming Performance. The TV Shootout has brought together a high-powered panel of judges from across the industry that includes:
- Lee Kline, Head of the Technical Team, The Criterion Collection
- Kevin Collins, Director of Mixed Reality Enablement, Microsoft
- Sam Runco, Former CEO of Runco International
- Brandon Yates, Partner, Yates & Parks Consulting
- Vincent Pagliaro, Digital Technician
How the Shootout Works
At the 14th Annual TV Shootout, Silver and Miller and a team of professional ISF-certified calibrators test and calibrate the panels and provide their findings and other key background information in individual presentations. Product specialists from the manufacturers have been invited to present their unique product advantages. The group will measure, compare, and discuss how the TVs perform across a number of categories, including contrast ratio, peak brightness, black levels, color accuracy, color saturation, color volume, resolution, motion artifacts, and colorimetry. All tested panels will be concurrently fed through a professional HDMI distribution amp from 4K Blu-ray players, our 4K media server, 4K streaming, and USB as well as the latest 4K signal generator for test patterns.
The group will hold a Q&A session at the end of each presentation, and during the final hour of CE Week 2017, they will get up on stage and present the overall findings as well as announce the winners of the TV Shootout.
