It’s official. Apple’s new music phone and media player will officially be called “iPhone,” after an agreement with Cisco, which owns the trademark.

Details of the deal are sketchy right now, but it appears the two companies will use the trademark in concert, and both will explore “opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, and consumer and enterprise communications,” according to the press release. Other terms of the deal are “confidential.”

So far, most of Cisco’s efforts in the CE space have been through its Linksys subsidiary, which is the one that has marketed the iPhone, an Internet phone for use with services such as Skype and Yahoo Messenger.

The question of how Cisco will continue to address the consumer electronics market is one that will be answered in the months ahead.
