Best Buy this week announced ambitious goals for reduction of carbon emissions, stating its intention to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8 percent per square foot by 2012, in all of its retail stores as well as corporate headquarters and other facilities.

The retail giant plans to meet this goal by placing high efficiency lighting any skylights in new stores, as well as installing them in some existing stores. It will also upgrade its Energy Management System in order to keep better track of energy spikes. Best Buy also plans to test solar panels on some stores.

"We're proud of the efforts we've made over the past decade to decrease our energy use," the company's COO, Brian Dunn, said as part of the announcement. "This commitment to reduce our emissions signals our willingness to invest in even more efficient operations today, which will save money over time and help us to meet the expectations of our customers, employees, and shareholders."
