CEA's Shapiro Takes to Times on Sharing Economy
Gary Shapiro, the president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, had a letter published in the New York Times on Wednesday, on the topic of attempts by New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to regulate Airbnb, and other aspects of the “sharing economy,” lest New York become a “no-go state for innovation.”
In the letter, Shapiro points out that government regulations on online services often are meant to protect existing players, rather than consumers.
“While it is understandable that politically connected industries ask government to stifle new business models, government must decline the invitation,” Shapiro wrote. “Disruptive start-ups like Uber, Airbnb, Tesla and Aereo benefit our citizens and drive our economy.”
Shapiro also recently published an op-ed on the conservative website the Daily Caller, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to side with Aereo.
