Cisco Unveils Consumer Conferencing
Cisco Wednesday announced the launch of umi telepresence, a consumer-focused product meant to help people connect through HD TVs and broadband Internet. The product comes with the console itself plus an HD camera and remote.
“Cisco is bringing people together, driving new video experiences that change the way we communicate, connect, and enjoy entertainment – in the home, at work, and on the go,” John Chambers, chairman and CEO of Cisco, said as part of the announcement.
“Cisco ūmi will bring the unique telepresence experience into living rooms and change the way we are able to be together with family and friends. We envision a future where technologies like this will play a role in connecting consumers with businesses to enable the delivery of new services, ranging from education, to health care, to financial services – to the home.”
The product, with an MSRP of $599 with a monthly fee of $24.99, will be available for preorder Oct. 6 from Cisco, Oct.18 from Best Buy and will arrive in stores Nov. 14. It will be featured in a multimedia advertising campaign featuring TV commercials with actress Ellen Page, a mall tour and an appearance on the “Oprah Winfrey Show.”
