Ben Arnold, 37, Executive Director, Industry Analyst, The NPD Group, Port Washington, N.Y.
Twitter Handle: @TechBarnold
Background: Grew up in Reston, Va.; now lives in Leesburg, Va.
Higher Education: University of Virginia
Years in Industry: 7
Brief Description of Role: I provide thought leadership on the direction of the industry for our clients. As someone with access to NPD’s full suite of data and services, I look at our data in various ways, take input from what I hear in the tech news every day, and listen to what our clients tell me and form opinions on where the sales, usage and feature trends are headed in the industry. I began my career as a media buyer out of college, using research to justify spending millions of dollars on ad placements. That role was all about studying consumers’ media habits. Today, consumers’ media habits are their technology habits, so I really feel like I’ve been studying consumer tech habits for 14 years – ever since I started working.
Main Industry Accomplishments and Why Important to Company/Industry; Proudest Achievement: My proudest achievement is just becoming a voice in the industry. For me, that indicates a level of trust in my opinions.
Awards: I was named NPD’s Team Player of the Year last year, and for me, that was an indicator of achieving a level of credibility and trust in the industry.
What I Like Best About My Job: I love talking to people about technology and how tech products will impact our lives in the future.
What I Like Least About My Job: I’m not good at administrative tasks like expense reports and asking for time off.
Favorite Pastime/Hobby: I have two young children, so when I’m not traveling, my hobby is hanging out with them. I also love playing basketball and soccer.
Best Concert Ever Seen: Mos Def, at the Bowery Ballroom in 2002
Who’s My Hero, and Why: I was raised by a single mother and now that I have children I appreciate how difficult that is, so my hero is Carmen Arnold, my mother.
Favorite CE Product of the Year: We got a couple of Sonos PLAY:1s at our house, and now music is constantly playing throughout our house all day long. It’s amazing how that changes the vibe in your home, for the better.
If You Could Be Anyplace Else Right Now, Where Would it Be and What Would You Be Doing?: Playing point guard for the Lakers, but technology analyst is a close second.
