December of 2009 was the best month for gaming sales in history, as both the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 had their strongest month ever. That's according to figures released last week by NPD Group, as cited by PC World.

"The video game industry experienced its biggest sales month ever, besting last December by 4%," NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement issued to the press.

The Wii moved 3.81 million units, the NIntendo DS portable console 3.31 million and the PS3 1.36 million. Frazier added that the current generation of consoles has outsold its previous generation by 9 million units in their first 50 months on the market.

The top-selling game was the Wii's "New Super Mario Bros." with 2.82 million, followed by the"Wii Fit Plus" and "Wii Fit Sports Resort" with 2.41 million and 1.79 million, respectively. Also breaking 1 million in sales were the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of "Modern Warfare 2," and "Wii Play" for Wii.
