Domestic retail sales rose in March for the third straight month, according to figures released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The department reported a rise of 1.6 percent in the month, after February sales rose 0.5 percent.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had expected a 1.2 percent gain.

However, electronics and appliances were among the few weak categories, posting a 1.3 percent drop in sales on the month. Sales dropped from $8.88 billion in February to $8.76 billion in March, according to the department's estimated numbers.
