In response to criticism from environmentalists that its products use too much energy, five of the world's largest mobile phone makers have joined forces to impose an energy rating system for chargers.

The effort includes LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Sony Ericsson.

According to the companies, two thirds of the energy used by mobile devices is used when charges are left plugged into walls without phones connected to them. Under the new system, charges will be rated, from 1 to 5, on how much energy they use.
