Garmin announced Monday that it will lay off 141 employees this week, marking the first time the company has ever cut jobs. According to the Kansas City Star, the cutbacks were set entirely at the company's headquarters and call centers in Olathe, Kansas.

The layoffs are being made due to "excess capacity in some areas of the company" due to the down economy, company president Cliff Pemble told the Star.

Those being let go, representing 5.6 percent of the company's Kansas City-area employees, will be given severance packages.
