Global mobile phone sales numbers released Wednesday by Gartner, Inc. were decidedly mixed, as overall mobile phone sales dropped 9.4 percent, while sales of smart phones specifically rose 12.7 percent, in the first quarter.

Gartner also said that this was the largest decline in quarterly reports in the survey's eight-year history, and that it doesn't expect an overall recovery in mobile phone purchases until next year.

In terms of market share, Nokia kept its worldwide total in overall phones, while Research in Motion widened its lead in smart phone share to 20 percent.
