Google announced Tuesday that it will adapt its Google Chrome browser into a full-pledged PC operating system. The announcement came in a post on the Official Google Blog, written by vice president of product management Sundar Pichai and engineering director Linus Upson.

The Google Chrome Operating System, which will complete directly with Microsoft's Windows, was described by the authors as "an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks," with full-sized PCs to follow.

The first netbooks featuring the OS are set to arrive in the second half of 2010.
