Toshiba may have already lost the format war, but that doesn’t mean they’re done competing with Blu-ray.
According to the Japanese newspaper the Yomiuri Shimbun, the company is at work on a new DVD player that would produce higher-definition images than standard DVD. The technology is made possible, the Shimbun said, by developing “a large integrated circuit that can instantly convert images produced in the current format into high-resolution images.” The Shimbun story cited company sources.
Release of the device, which lacks a name, is expected by year’s end, although the timetable for North American distribution is unknown.
Toshiba ceded the high-definition disc format war to Sony’s Blu-ray Disc format in March, when it ceased production of its own HD DVD format.
Do you think this will work where HD DVD failed? Talk about it in
the Dealerscope forums.
Uh, yeah, isn't that called 'upconversion'?
Now, a cooler idea would be a device that recognizes a DVD when you put it in and would download extra data from the internet and merge it with the disc to make it true HD. Or would allow anyone with any DVD to watch the HD version just by putting in their existing DVD.
