Dealerscope Inducts 40 Under 40 Leaders

In this month's issue of Dealerscope, we feature our annual listing of 40 leaders in the CE industry who are under 40 years old. Every year we take this time to profile the young executives and managers who provide the energy, enthusiasm and ideas that push this industry to new heights.
As in the past, we reached out to retailers, vendors, distributors, buying groups and software developers to submit their best talent. While we're familiar with many of the choices, we're delighted with some of the people who haven't been on our radar. You will be, too.
Over the next few weeks on Dealerscope.com, we'll begin introducing you to our inductees. We'll start today with a few outtakes from our interviews with the winners, in which we asked them for their predictions on sales, product and industry trends they see dominating the CE market during the next half of the year. Roxanne Leone, marketing manager at distributor New Age Electronics and its subsidiary, Jack Of All Games, expects the accessories market to remain strong throughout the rest of the year, especially for those distributors and retailers that follow a consultative sales strategy. That model, she said, allows New Age to plan its execution months ahead of the general industry. "We anticipate possible issues and have a game plan on how to attack before they arise," Leone said.
Damon Owens, sales supervisor, home entertainment and video games at D&H Distributing, has a prediction most retailers will welcome. "One of the more important areas is in the development of smart TVs," he said, adding that Nintendo's upcoming console should spark the gaming market. "We've really seen [smart TVs] take off as something people are asking for.
Jennifer Monasterio, president of Mack Worldwide Warranties, brings some more welcoming news.
"I know that everyone is very sensitive about stocking issues. They're worried about not having enough products for the holidays, due to what happened in Japan," she said. "My prediction is that regardless of inventory issues, we're going to have a stellar holiday season. We're going to exceed last year and the year before. I see a lot of positive economic signs."
The positive vibes are also spreading to the 12-volt/mobile electronics market.
"Things are much more positive within the mobile electronics industry than they were a year ago," said Matthew Valbuena, senior product planner for Pioneer's car electronics division. "It could be driven by a desire for in-car connectivity and convenience, especially within the in-dash multimedia category; or it could simply be the effects of an economic recovery that has brought consumers back to the marketplace."
We'd like to think it's all of those things and more.
Scott Newnam, president of Audio Advice, a custom home technology integrator in Raleigh, N.C., is taking a more cautious view of the recovery.
"I think there will be a slow improvement in the industry throughout the rest of this year," he said. "It will likely continue to also be a bit unpredictable in terms of one month looking great and another more questionable."
Maybe predictions for 2011 wouldn't be complete without at least a few words on the tablet market. Pinakin Dinesh, CEO of Amzer, an Apple-focused accessories manufacturer, could barely restrain his enthusiasm.
"I think tablets are going to overtake everything, they're going to change the way kids look at computers," Dinesh said, adding that other manufacturers will pose some competition to the mighty Apple. "Back-to-school is going to be all tablets. No kid is going to ask their parents for a laptop."

"Our research indicates that consumer confidence in technology and in the overall economy is increasing," said Veronica O'Connell, CEA's vice president of congressional affairs. "I believe this momentum will continue, resulting in our industry being up."
