Report: Sprint Has Huge Deal For iPhone

Seemingly confirming months of rumors about a third carrier for the iPhone, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday that Sprint has reached a deal to carry the device, at a huge cost.

According to the Journal, the carrier has agreed to purchase 30.5 million of the devices- at a cost in the $20 billion range- for a place at the iPhone table. CEO Dan Hesse has reportedly told the company’s board that the deal will likely cause the company to lose money by 2014.

Meanwhile, Monday quoted a source who claimed that the advanced iPhone 5 would soon launch as a Sprint-exclusive 4G device as part of the Sprint deal, while AT&T and Verizon would get only the iPhone 4S, at least until early 2012. This aspect was not part of the Journal report, however.
