Retail sales in the U.S. dropped 1.2 percent in May, the first drop since September, according to figures released Friday by the Census Bureau.

The estimated May total was $362.5 billion, a figure which represented a 7.4 percent gain from the same month last year.

Electronics and appliances, however, were a bright spot, rising to an estimated $7.87 billion from April's $7.2 billion figure.
