Despite the economic slowdown, sales of mobile phones remain up, while Samsung has become the U.S. market share leader for the first time.

That's according to a study released last week by the research firm Strategy Analytics. It found that 47 million units shipped in the third quarter of 2008, a 6.2 percent jump from the same period the year before. Behind Samsung, Research in Motion maintained a double-digit market share, while Apple grabbed the #6 spot.

"Samsung had a strong quarter. Samsung registered 22.4 percent marketshare in the US during Q3 2008, enabling it to reach first position for the first time in its history," the group's senior analyst, Bonny Joy, said as part of the release. "Samsung’s growing retail presence and an attractive handset portfolio for each of the big four operators proved crucial in grabbing the prestigious title of the number one vendor in the world’s single largest handset market.”
