At CEDIA 2017, Sony Electronics announced a new lineup of 4K projectors at a variety of price points designed to bolster its dominant position as a preferred brand among custom integrators, said company president and COO Mike Fasulo.
Among the introductions he described at a pre-show press conference was the Model VPL-VW285ES, the most affordable of the introductions. Available for sale this week at under $5,000, it uses three SXRD imagers, HDR contrast control and Sony’s wide color TRILUMINOS display in a compact, quiet-running chassis.
The VPL-VW385ES step-up mid-range model offers single-button access to a number of preset aspect ratios and a dynamic contrast spec of 200,000:1. Built-in auto calibration rounds out the features, and the model will be available this month at under $8,000.
The lineup is led by the premium model VPL-VW885ES, a three-chip 4K HDR laser projector to be available later in 2017 at less than $25,000; it is rated for 20,000 hours and featuring 2,000 Lumens of brightness. Other features are Infinite Dynamic Contrast with real-time laser light level control, and the 885 also has two 18 Gbps HDMI inputs that support HDCP 2.2, to allow access to the highest frame rates and bit depths of 4K resolution content. It also provides one-button access to different aspect ratio presets.
Sony also announced a cross promotion it is undertaking with Kaleidescape, which markets the Strato 4K Ultra HD HDR movie player, with the aim of “driving the 4K HDR experience,” said Frank Sterns, Sony’s vice president of AV specialty and custom integration.
Kaleidescape will partner with Sony to provide promotional offers for consumers who purchase a Sony 4K HDR projector and a Kaleidescape 4K player. Offers include movie bundles valued up to $350 and are available to consumers that become owners of both a Sony 4K projector and a Strato player between Sept. 1, 2017 and Mar. 31, 2018.
“Sony projectors, with their true 4K HDR picture quality, are the best home projectors for viewing movies from a Kaleidescape 4K player because the player provides true HDR BD quality and the Sony projectors can put all that quality onto the screen,” said Kaleidescape Founder and CEO Cheena Srinivasan.
