Tuesday in CE: Job Board Hints Spotify Getting Serious About Hardware Venture
Spotify not-so-subtly hinted that they are getting into the hardware game, listing three job opportunities that all contain some rephrasing of 'hardware manager.' There have been rumors in the past about Spotify gearing up for a hardware venture, but it has been largely unproven.
Spotify is on its way to creating its first physical products and setting up an operational organisation for manufacturing, supply chain, sales & marketing.
We are looking for a passionate and seasoned Operations Manager that will contribute in the creation of innovative Spotify experiences via connected hardware. You will define and manage Distribution, Supply, Logistics, fulfillment and Customer Service for Hardware Products. You will also work with partners to deliver the optimal Spotify experience to millions of users. Above all, your work will impact the way the world experiences music.
The most interesting description is "connected hardware." Spotify has been hanging their hat on a connected platform for a while now, edging out competitors thanks to its ease of use and the multiple digital assistants it works with. On the physical side, it's hard to really know what to expect. The smart speaker market is becoming somewhat of an oligarchy, making the barrier really high for a speaker to excel without a special sauce. Unfortunately, most speakers (read non-Apple) are really good at streaming Spotify and I don't foresee them taking away features from other manufacturers just so their product will excel.
I would double down on some smart headphones that can store music, à la Bragi, but only time will tell and Spotify is keeping this one close to the chest.
