The retail giant signed the letter along with a couple of strange bedfellows: labor giant Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the liberal-leaning think tank Center for American Progress (CAP). It was signed by Walmart CEO Mike Duke, along with CAP President/CEO John Podesta and SEIU President Andrew L. Stern.
"We are for an employer mandate which is fair and broad in its coverage, but any alternative to an employer mandate should not create barriers to hiring entry level employees," the letter stated. "We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to develop a requirement that is both sensible and equitable."
The letter also argued that action must be taken now because the lack of coverage for everyone has led to excessive health care costs.
