Microsoft Friday officially releases Windows 8, including the new Surface tablet.
 
The company held a launch event Thursday in New York for both.

The new operating system introduces a new look for Windows, applying the tile-like interface from Windows Phone 7 to PCs and tablets; Windows 8 is also more uniform across phones, PCs and tablets than previous versions of the software.
