$200 Blu-ray Players by Christmas?

With the format war over and Blu-ray now all alone, prices on Blu-ray players are expected to drop, to the point where the devices are selling for around $200 this Christmas.

Why’s that? Because, according to the Web site Blu-ray Statistics News Log, chip-makers such as Mediatek and Zoran are at work on chip-sets for the players. With those makers squaring off against the established Broadcom and Sigma versions, chip commoditization and, eventually, declines in price- are likely to follow.

The least expensive Blu-ray Disc Players are currently in the $350-$400 range, according to Amazon.com

Do you think prices will drop that much? Talk about it in the Dealerscope forums.

The money is in the software not the hardware, ther is always a higher end unit at a high end price such as the Panasonic. Both hardware and software prices need to drop to make it mainstream.

My opinion is on the contrary. Prices will rise for a while. Without the HD-DVD format at the front battle the tendency is to raise prices for Blu_Ray, as Panasonic did recently with model BD30.
