Learning From the Toyota Debacle
March 11, 2010
From Sachs Report
There is an old Yiddish joke about a 40-year-old bachelor who is terrified of women. He is told of an impending visit from a recent widow who is looking for a new husband. He speaks with his mother about his nervousness over the meeting, and she advises him not to worry. She says, “Remember women are interested in three things: food, family and philosophy. Talk of these three things and all will be fine.” The day of the meeting it turns out the woman is about 4’8” tall and approximately 230 pounds. She has no warm features about her and the man is terrified from the onset. He remembers his mother’s advice about food and asks, “Do you like noodles?” She replies, “No, I do not like noodles.” He then remembers mom’s advice about family and asks, “Do you have a brother?” Her abrupt answer is, “No, I do not have a brother.” The man becomes more concerned and then remembers his mother’s final advice about philosophy and asks, “If you had a brother, do you think he would like noodles?” This story makes me wonder if Toyota had the chance, do you think they would like to start over again managing the recent crisis issues they are having? Given the chance, what would you do differently?

What the 12-volt Industry Must Change: Part 3
February 11, 2010
From Sachs Report
All of us need to commend Amazon for reaching out to thousands of car audio enthusiasts last week. It was the single largest promotion of the 12-volt industry since CES. Their e-mail blast, showcasing a number of products, is exactly what the industry needs to do to raise awareness and generate interest. Thanks, Amazon, for getting the message. In addition to that message, and others I have presented the past few weeks, consider a few more as I continue to present 10 ideas that I think can help turn the ship around.Admittedly, my perspective is from a manufacturer background, and I shouldn’t need to remind you manufacturers need to make a profit. Not everything we sold was sold profitably. Over the years price compression in all categories has taken its toll on margins and gross profit. With that in mind, I also feel that manufacturers must give back to the industry and community. If everyone enjoyed playing the game of golf yet no one repaired any of his or her divots or ball marks, it would not be long before courses became unplayable. (I am writing this at the golf course, feeling guilty, thus the metaphor.)While at
Pioneer, I started a number of programs designed to acknowledge the winners in our industry. The ‘Give Back” award was one of personal pride as this was given nationally to the retailer that gave the most back to his community and marketplace.

Turning the Ship Around
January 27, 2010
From Sachs Report
Over the next few weeks I will present what I believe to be the top 10 things the car audio industry should do in order to “turn the ship around.” The 12-volt industry is in most difficult straits and to simply continue running business as usual is just folly. Simple awareness of the industry is at the lowest I have ever seen. When asked to name a car stereo brand, an overwhelming majority cannot name
Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood or Alpine, let alone any other brand. Even aided awareness shouts a cry for help like a hungry newborn cries for its mother’s milk.

So What Do We Do Now?
January 6, 2010
From Sachs Report
The New Year has just arrived and some would say a new decade has begun. I am not certain on which side I personally sit with regard to the debate on whether or not the decade begins with 2010 or you have to finish 2010 first. Honestly once you get up in years you will find that to be the least of your worries.
