Any Way You Go
October 24, 2008 From Accessories
Mobile electronics accessories are always the shining star in the profits of specialty retailers. There are the entry level accessories with extra features built in, such as high-end interconnects and power distribution. After that are step-up accessories, the ones that come after you’ve sold a head unit or a pair of speakers. With the customer rapport established, it’s much easier for the salesperson to say, “By the way, while we have your dashboard apart, we can install this for you at a discount because we’re already halfway there.”

Beyond Bondo
May 2008 From Dealerscope
We have seen the scenario over and over again in the mobile electronics industry: A twenty-something-year-old guy comes in for a job saying he has experience installing everything … on a friend’s car. The problem is the friend’s car isn’t a S63 AMG or 750Li. On top of that, the work most likely took place in a less-than-professional environment, where the rules of conduct weren’t quite what they’d be at a reputable shop. For store owners, it has become more difficult to hire young workers for fear of unleashing a green 20-year-old wielding a pair of Snap-On wire cutters on a luxury

Strength In Numbers
May 2008 From Dealerscope
Joining a buying group to improve a dealer’s competitive edge against big-box retailers is nothing new. But it is a relatively new strategy that’s gaining popularity for mobile electronics (ME) retailers. The model for buying groups serving CE retailers never quite worked for ME dealers. After all, there are vehicle-specific specialty lines, distributors that stock a variety of products and manufacturer reps pounding the pavement and pitching just about every product line under the sun to every dealer with a storefront. One of the biggest problems, according to industry players, is that it was difficult for buying groups to provide the

The Future of Car Audio and the Independent Specialists
July 2007 From Dealerscope
The last three years have not been kind to the mobile electronics aftermarket. But there are still plenty of reasons to be upbeat about the future, as long as we all do a good job of recognizing opportunities and acting on them. One driver fueling those opportunities is that young people are into music more than ever before. The club scene is huge and an intense musical experience lies at its core. Music has also become a bigger part of an active lifestyle. Wakeboarders would not think of performing their routine without music, while snowboarders listen to music on their iPods or on outdoor sound

Making Sound Waves
May 2007 From Dealerscope
If you’re a mobile electronics retailer you better move those spring or summer vacation plans to the fall. Even though the weather is still lousy in most parts of the country, dealers tell us the kids are already lining up at the installation bays for the latest and loudest sound systems (the better to hear the beat over the engine while wakeboarding), while Mr. Deep Pockets has designs on the latest and fullest home entertainment system to update that little yacht he has floating over at the mariner. The time is here for all mobile dealers to make a little extra space in the
