108-inch Sharp Debuts at 6th Ave.
Another volley was launched in the flat-screen war of inches on the salesfloor yesterday, as New Jersey-based specialty dealer/custom installer 6th Avenue Electronics hosted the official retail debut of Sharp Electronics’ 108-inch 1080p LCD TV, becoming the first store to show – and sell – the product.
Although prototypes had been touted at trade shows since 2007, the Paramus, N.J. location of the 12-store chain was used by Sharp to kick off consumer exposure to the model. The CEO of 6th Avenue, Mike Temiz, said that two orders from early adopters had already been taken for the set, which Sharp’s associate vice president of marketing, Bruce Tripido, said will command a ticket “somewhere in the low six figures” when it begins to ship this spring.
Tripido said that the 108s produced by Sharp would come from the company’s Kameyama 2 plant in Japan’s Mie prefecture – a Gen-8 panel facility. The latest-announced Gen-10 panel facility, he said, was at first being optimized for 42- 57- and 65-inch panels.
