Distraction Education May Bring More Store Traffic
This is the city — Los Angeles, Calif. I write here. I’m a columnist. I carry a laptop.
It is Wednesday, August 26, 2009. The sun was working its way through the smoke of the Station Fire in Los Angeles, and I was on my way to the library. It is a public library. I write there. At the library. The light turned green for me to proceed. I hesitated. Instinct? Premonition? It may have saved my life. I let out a long, slow breath.
It was hard to tell, but most likely she was in her early 20s and talking on her cell phone. If she had any idea where she was or what she was doing at the time, there was certainly no indication of such. She drove through the red light, like an elderly person in South Florida, with a right blinker on and turned left across several lanes of traffic. Her life may have also been saved that day because of my hesitation.
