12V: AudioControl Celebrates 40
When it comes to the world of tuning a great audio system, perhaps no manufacturer has dispensed as much information about the subject for the entire duration of high-quality aftermarket 12-volt as AudioControl. A company that has been involved in both audio/home theater products and 12-volt audio for the past 40 years, AudioControl has roots in 12-volt that are steeped deep in the world of car audio competition. It makes me feel old to remember the AudioControl Spike mascot and the T-shirts and jackets he resided on at the shows.
The company taught installation technicians everywhere what a Real Time Analyzer (RTA) is, and how to properly tune a car using one. The company continues to teach techs and competitors about EQ curves… how ruler-flat does not usually sound good (but smooth usually does). AudioControl taught hundreds of installers how crossovers work and how to properly choose the best crossover frequency for both smooth frequency response and a great-sounding system. The company’s SA-3052A Car Audio RTA is found in bays across the country. It is versatile enough to not only check out the frequency response of a system, but also can be used to measure SPL for ground-pounding competitions and to properly set amplifier levels for maximum performance with minimal distortion. This preliminary education in the world of analog tuning helped all of us make the transition to digital tuning easy. Instead of adjusting small dials in the trunk, we now use an app and a laptop in the front seat. However, digital tuning adds additional parameters such as time delays and both graphic and parametric equalizers. Thanks to AudioControl and its passion for the RTA, we have the prerequisite knowledge to help us get the job done, and thrill the customer with killer sound.
