1999 CE Retailing Giants - CE Giants Chase Internet Sales
Staples doesn't expect to have to wait another two years for significant Internet sales, either.
In November the company launched an e-commerce site, devoting, according to spokesman Shannon LaPierre, about $10 million to pay for personnel salaries, necessary technology and marketing efforts. By late December, the site had proven so popular that the company allotted another $10 million toward its growth. That same month, Staples created a corporate division simply to handle Internet sales.
The list goes on and on. Costco in November launched an e-commerce site, allowing consumers to purchase consumer electronics along with other goods. Even Tandy/Radio Shack, which has over the last few years divested itself of both the Incredible Universe and Computer City chains, plans to expand into cyberspace. An e-commerce site is slated for this summer.
