1999 Geography of Retailing - Atlanta
Slow holiday sales, for some retail segments, were followed by January bargain shoppers. "If you were in the retail ready-to-wear [clothing] business, you got killed," said HiFi Buys' Ginsburg. "We didn't have a winter." But electronics faired well, he said.
Outlook: Atlanta keeps growing northward, unfettered by natural boundaries. The retailing landscape is about to radically change, with a 1.7 million-sq.-ft. Mall of Georgia (MOG) currently under construction in Buford, Gwinnett County. The MOG is slated to open in August, with a companion complex, the 450,000-sq.-ft. Mall of Georgia Crossing "power center" underway across I-20. Best Buy, Target and Staples have committed to the MOG Crossing.
Sears is due to open a full-line store in Waycross in spring 2000.
