$30 Screen Protector Makes Any Smartphone Holographic
If you’re going to drop $30 on a screen protector for your overpriced smartphone, why not do so on a product that does more than just prevent damage to your screen? That’s exactly what Lucid, an AI vision startup, and Holitech Technology Company, a touch screen supplier, are hoping consumers will say to their new collaboration—Holoscreen.
The two brands have come together and introduced a screen protector that allows any smartphone screen to display glasses-free 3D content and capture through an app.
“While the 3D and VR/AR industry were struggling with the burden of wearing glasses and headsets as well as the lack of content, there is now this new wave of high-end smartphones coming which makes immersive content consumption and creation as simple as ever,” Han Jin, CEO/Co-founder at Lucid, said in a statement. “Such simple solutions as the screen protector are essential to create a bridge between the state the industry is in right now to where 3D and VR/AR are going. It completely removes the friction for consumers.”
To clarify, the Holoscreen screen protector won’t turn all content on a smartphone into 3D-ready content—which is a good thing. I couldn’t imagine having to stare at and readjust my eyes to 3D content all the time. It’d be too much. Rather, Holoscreen is designed to work its magic specifically through Lucid’s Andromeda software—a more mobile-friendly processing version of its 3D Fusion Technology, which runs on higher-end processing chips.
The screen is about more than just viewing 3D-ready content (sans glasses) though. Users will be able to take their own 3D pictures and video through the app.
“We are very excited about this partnership, as it will help to significantly increase the amount of available content to view through our glasses-free 3D protector screens, because with Lucid’s technology everyone can just easily capture their own imagery," Giovanni Suero, Executive Director of Business Development at Holitech, said in the statement. "Lucid's capability to integrate and make 3D capture work on any phone impressed us and the demand for our combined solution is overwhelming."
The app and screen protector will be available in the second half of this year.
