50-Inch Plasmas Overtake 40-Inch for the First Time
A new survey shows growth in the 50-inch-and-above plasma market, at a time when most indicators show plasma falling behind LCD.
According to Quixel Research’s Plasma TV Market Review survey, released last week, 48 percent of high-def TVs in the 50- to 59-inch screen category are plasmas, the highest of any type in the category, based on data taken in the second quarter of 2007. The survey also found that sales of 50-inch plasmas overtook 42-inch plasmas for the first time ever.
A study by the market research firm In-Stat earlier this month predicted that LCD will capture 75 percent of the HDTV market by 2011, with plasma dropping below 15 percent.
