800.com's Surprise Successes On the Web
The next category the company is moving into is the PDA business, partly because it is one of the highest searched for items on the company's site. 800.com has been stocking Sony CLIEs for a year, but in October started a separate section on the site dedicated to the PDAs called the PDA/Handheld Store. The company obtained authorization to sell PDAs for Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Palm and Casio. A key store feature is the PDA Accessory Matcher, which provides a selection of compatible memory, keyboards, cradles, add-ons and cases.. For right now it is about as close as the company wants to get to computing products. Sadowski feels the market is well served for desktop and notebook computers and sees it as a commodity business that does not offer a lot of profit.
