Company Offers HD DVD-to-Blu-ray “Upgrade”
In a new service meant to comfort movie lovers who backed the wrong horse in the format war, a company called HDScape is offering to convert customers’ HD DVD collections into Blu-ray. The service requires customers to send the paper case wraps of their HD DVD movies, along with $11.95 and another 99 cents for shipping and handling, in exchange for the same movie on Blu-ray Disc.
The service allows for customers to keep their actual HD DVD disc, in case they wish to still watch the DVD side of combo discs. The service takes 2-3 weeks and is only available to customers in the U.S.; customers will not be able to send in one movie’s jacket and get another in Blu-ray.
There had been some hope that some of the studios that backed HD DVD would offer a similar program, but none have done so as of yet.
