Who needs a vacation home? Get the fridge!
Americans reach for the fridge about seven times more often than they reach for the freezer, according to LG’s Director of Merchandising Tim Kavanaugh. The real question in appliance retail this year, though, is how often are they willing to reach for their wallets?
Premium appliances abound in the marketplace this year, with some stainless steel washers, dryers, and refrigerators pushing $5,000. Samsung marketing manager Tony Wisniewski says consumers are increasingly comfortable with splurging on upgrades. “Even for aspirational buyers, this isn’t out of the daydream,” he said of a $3,498 refrigerator sporting a wireless TV on the door.
Manufacturers are willing to back up those fat price tags with long spec sheets and some new technology. The latest generation of washers use steam, silver and non-agitating jacuzzi swirls of water to treat clothes gently. Eager to get in on the “green market,” appliance makers are creating more energy-efficient and waste-free products as well.
