Do iPods Cause Crime?
What’s the reason violent crime in U.S. cities has steadily risen in recent years? According to one recent study, the rise in ownership of iPods and other portable devices may very well have something to do with it.
The relationship is no accident according to a study released by the Urban Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank. In “Is There an iCrime Wave?,” co-authors Aaron Chalfin and John Roman found that “the rise in violent offending and the explosion in the sales of iPods and other portable media devices is more than coincidental.”
What’s the reason? More high-end gadgets in the hands of the average pedestrian has simply led to more material for criminals to steal. In addition, millions of people walking around with headphones on has left more and more people distracted.
