YouTube Suit a Long Way From Court
According to a lawyer at the center of the matter, the $1 billion lawsuit between Viacom and Google over copyright infringement on Google’s YouTube Web site is a long way -perhaps as much as two years- away from reaching a trial courtroom.
The Web site TechConfidential.com on Monday quoted Michael Fricklas, Viacom’s general counsel, as saying he expects the trial in the case to not even begin until 2009. Earlier estimates had placed the trial date sometime before the end of the year. The delay raises the possibility that the landscape in the content distribution sector could be radically different by the time the case actually reaches trial. In March, entertainment giant Viacom filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Google, alleging that its content had been broadcast on YouTube, alongside paid advertising, without permission.
