Still, there were some products demonstrated as retail ready, or nearly so, owning to their use of Point of Deployment (POD) modules as directed by Open Cable specifications, making them portable from one service area to another.
Zenith (below) showed what it called a "retail-ready" STB, which supports General Instruments' head end applications and Open Cable network interface. No retail price on the box was provided due to issues mentioned above, but a Zenith spokesperson speculated that it would be under $500.
Scientific Atlanta, one of the major STB suppliers to cable providers, demonstrated POD operability with its "ready-for-retail" Explorer 6000 and PowerKey conditional access module. The PCMCIA form factor module fits Open Cable specifications.
