Again With the Overheating Batteries
Lenovo and IBM joined the ranks of laptop recall veterans Apple and Dell Thursday, announcing a voluntary recall of rechargeable, lithium-ion batteries used in ThinkPad notebook computers. About 168,500 batteries in the U.S. and 357,000 worldwide are affected. As with the Sony and Dell recalls, the battery manufacturer is Sony and, as before, the danger is overheating which, in this case, generated enough smoke and sparks at an airport terminal to warrant the use of a fire extinguisher.
Lenovo has provided a phone number (800-426-7378) and a website (http://www.lenovo.com/batteryprogram) for customers who may have affected laptops, while Sony recently announced plans for a global battery replacement program.
