ALMO Settles Into New Home
"We never fall in love with our inventory," said Warren Chaiken, ALMO Corporation's senior vice president, as he showed Dealerscope around ALMO's new 125,000 sq. ft. headquarters at the edge of Philadelphia, near Bensalem, Pa. With 105,000 sq. ft. dedicated to warehousing, and 20,000 sq. ft. to offices, the new location consolidated three pre-existing ALMO buildings. Higher warehouse ceilings gained two-and-a-half times the cubic storage space. The new headquarters supports ALMO's multifaceted distribution business, which, with a total of six locations, serves a region from Maine to Virginia and as far west as the Dakotas. ALMO's speciality product division catering to the professional residential appliance and outdoor products market covers additional territory in the Southeastern United States. According to Chaiken, ALMO, founded in 1946, leverages its computer and distribution infrastructure to serve the consumer electronics and appliance dealer market, the Pro A/V market, the education market, the industrial cable market, and drop-shipment to consumers for dot-coms and to employees for incentive programs such as Philips Employee store. ALMO's business to business Web site allows customers and sales reps to access real time product specification, pricing and program information, while a computerized shipping matrix reduces cost and time for drop shipments. Key ALMO vendors include Philips, Panasonic and Pioneer in electronics, and Frigidaire, Gibson, Tappan, Panasonic, DCS, Lynx and Sharp in appliances. Chaiken said ALMO is seeking to expand its appliance business, possibly into professional appliances, and also its territory. Chaiken's goal is to expand coverage to two-thirds of the United States, to Florida and Texas, by acquisition or construction of distribution centers.
