Amazon and Best Buy Dominate Ecommerce in New Report
In a fresh report from web traffic analytics company SimilarWeb, Amazon and Best Buy are the clear winners in ecommerce in their respective categories. SimilarWeb took data from the first four months of 2017 and looked at it under the scope of online retailing broken up by product categories.
In the report, SimilarWeb separates out the two companies on a slight technicality: Amazon is placed in a general merchandise category with companies like Walmart, eBay, and Target, while Best Buy is bucketed in the consumer electronics space with Newegg, B&H, and others.
Looked at from that perspective, the two companies absolutely obliterate the other brands in their product categories. Amazon—the far and away leader among any ecommerce brand, no matter the product category—wound up on top of the general merchandise category, nearly tripling the next closest company, eBay, based on total traffic. Walmart finished a distant third as Amazon outpaced the brick-and-mortar discount retailer nearly seven-to-one. Overall, Amazon captured 55.8 percent of the total traffic share in the general merchandise category.
