Amazon Gets Serious About Audio at Surprise Echo Hardware Event
There is a ton to unpack from Amazon’s second annual “surprise” hardware event held in Seattle on Thursday, which we’ll try to do over the coming days. The star of the show was certainly Amazon’s Alexa digital voice assistant, with new products launching left and right during the hour-plus event. But the best place to start with it all seems to be the audio domain.
If there’s one thing we learned about Amazon’s audio strategy yesterday, it’s that they plan to get serious about creating products that truly do sound great while also incorporating their smart home technology. At present, I think you’d be a fool to say that Amazon is creating products that go head to head with someone like a Sonos—meaning they fall short when it comes to how they actually perform on a one-to-one basis. However, some of the products unveiled at this event prove that Amazon has its sights set on the leader in streaming audio.
Namely, the three new tools in its audio arsenal that have us feeling that way are the EchoSub, the Echo Link, and the Echo Link Amp.
