Amazon Invests in Hatch Baby and Introduces New API
Amazon recently made two big strides in the baby care industry.
First being its partnership with Hatch Baby Inc. products. The startup company that appeared on Shark Tank in 2016 was overjoyed when they received the offer from Amazon.
“Amazon is clearly an incredible force when it comes to everything consumer internet… so when they came calling, we were very eager to have them participate as a strategic investor,” Hatch Baby Co-Founder Ann Crady Weiss told TechCrunch.
Hatch Baby products include smart changing pads and night-lights. Statistics such as baby’s weight, sleep, and diaper changes are recorded via an app connected to the products.
Now, Hatch Baby will be among the first three partners connecting to Alexa using the Amazon’s new Baby Skill Activity API.
The API provides parents with an alternative way to keep track of baby’s statistics and activities by using the voice assistant, Alexa. Baby care apps and devices can be updated without having to manually log any information.
Current categories of the API include: weight, sleep, diaper changes, and feeding. Additional categories are expected to be added down the line as needed
Examples of Baby Skill Activity voice commands include:
User: Alexa, track a dirty diaper change for Jane
User: Alexa, log a 3 ounce bottle for Jane
User: Alexa, start nursing from the left
User: Alexa, when was Jane’s last diaper change?
Amazon is hoping this push will increase engagement from parents, especially those purchasing connected products and using baby care apps.
