Amazon Launches Price Contest
Amazon.com has launched a unique contest which will let customers play a version of “The Price is Right”- they are offered the choice a chance to vote on several groups of products, each with deeply discounted prices listed. Then, a certain amount of customers will win the chance to buy the product they voted for for the discounted price.
For instance, the first “round” features the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3, with listed discounted prices of $79, $99, and $139, respectively, and customers are asked to vote for the one they want at the price they want. On Nov. 22 (Thanksgiving Day), when the round expires, 1,000 users will be picked at random and be offered the product they voted for for the listed sale price.
Another round, which could be called a proxy format war, pits a Blu-ray Disc player (Samsung’s BD-P1400) against an HD DVD rival (Toshiba’s HD A35), as well as a TiVo HD Digital Video Recorder. As of Thursday night at 5 PM EST, the HD DVD player led with 46 percent of the vote.
