Remember those old hand-crank flashlights? You know, the ones where you’d turn the handle as many times as your tired arm would allow, and then it would illuminate the dark room your in for a few moments? OK, now, imagine powering—or at least offering a bit of a battery bump—to your iPhone the same way.
That’s what AMPware has in mind with its new iPhone 6/6s hand-cranked generator case. The device is available for preorder now and was on display at its booth at CES 2016 last week in Las Vegas. The iPhone case, which has a retail price tag of $79.99, will officially begin shipping in March and is available in three colors: black, volt, and dark green.
AMPware explained that the patent-pending case is pretty simple to use. The user pulls out the foldout hand crank and begins turning. Cranking the device for five minutes supplies up to one hour of normal phone use. Further, the crank handle can double as a kickstand, AMPware said. The company said the case makes “significantly more power than solar cases and is more convenient for generating power in emergency situations where a traditional outlet might not be available.
